All honeys have a very mild antiseptic property due to the hydrogen peroxide they contain, but it is of limited effectiveness; only Leptospermum Honey has the stronger, more stable and powerful effect which is often referred to as non-peroxide activity. Leptospermum Honey is produced by bees from the flowers of the "Manuka" bush; it is native to and grows uncultivated throughout Australia and New Zealand; this tree has a short flowering period which makes the placement of hives and the timing of the harvest crucial.

Both the MGO™ and UMF® systems measure the strength of this additional antibacterial property that is unique to Leptospermum Honey. The antibacterial activity of Manuka Honey has been known for the longest time as UMF, Unique Manuka Factor, which is a way to measure the Manuka Honey's antibacterial capacity. Lately, scientific research has proved that the active ingredient in Manuka Honey is Dietary Methylglyoxal, MGO. In 2008, Professor Thomas Henle, University of Dresden, Germany, announced that the research unambiguously demonstrated that Methylglyoxal, MGO is directly responsible for the antibacterial activity of Manuka honey.

Nature's Care Royal Manuka Honey uses the MGO™ system to best determine and ensure that the active ingredient, MGO, can be truly delivered to our consumers, for its anti-bacterial strength. MGO™ is a system for testing the level of Methylglyoxal, the active ingredient that is exclusively responsible for the unique anti-bacterial activity of Manuka Honey. The MGO™ Certification is scientific and quantative, which involves testing for a chemical compound with +/- 5% error, allows higher accuracy to detect and measure the active ingredient, MGO, hence determining its active level. The higher the MGO™ rating in Leptospermum Honey the higher the level of anti-bacterial activity in the honey.

Manuka honey is uniquely special and different to other honeys because the special compound, Methylglyoxal. It remains stable and is resistant to heat, light and enzymatic activity in body fluids. Every honey has some anti-bacterial qualities, this however, quickly disappears when subjected to the body conditions such as heat at body temperature of 37oC; whereas Manuka Honey's Methylglyoxal would remain stable regardless, this phenomenon makes MGO Manuka Honey superior to other honeys.

MGO™ system is very easy to understand, for instance, MGO™ 20+ Manuka Honey means that honey contains 20mg per kg of Methylglyoxal, MGO™ 120+ Manuka Honey contains 120mg per kg of Methylglyoxal and so on.
